The West End is the proud home to a number of notable attractions.
This extraordinary park connects to Cleveland Park and provides a natural oasis
in the downtown business district. This restored and refurbished park features
scenic overlooks, nature trails, picnic areas, a pond with footgbridge, excavated
mill ruins, six landscaped garden areas, and, of course, the beautiful Reedy River
with its impressive series of falls and the Liberty Bridge.
Its numerous awards include:
2006 Outstanding Civil Engineering Achievement Merit Award, American Society
of Civil Engineers
2005 Arthur G. Hayden Medal for a single recent outstanding achievement in bridge
engineering demonstrating innovation in special use bridges.
2005 International Footbridge Award in the aesthetics category (medium span),
awarded in Venice, Italy.
Modeled after Fenway Park, home of the Boston Red Sox, West End Field boasts
its own “Green Monster,” a 30-foot high wall in left field, equipped with a manual
scoreboard. The dimensions all around the outfield wall are to the same specifications
as Fenway Park, including “Pesky’s Pole” in right field. West End Field is host
to more than the 70 Drive home games fans come to enjoy each season. The popular
facility is also host to special sporting events like the USA vs. Japan National
Team game and the popular Furman University vs. University of South Carolina baseball
game.
Post construction enhancements include The Coca Cola Dugout, The Upper Deck,
and The Picnic Pavilion - all of which add interest and appeal to a stadium already
heralded as one of the premier ballparks in the country. Fans will continue to
see more of the nostalgic look at West End Field, as several of the new enhancements
were built with the same reclaimed bricks from area mills that were used on the
original structure. Greenville’s rich baseball heritage is also brought to life
with information regarding players who were born in the Upstate or at one time
played in the region. The Drive is committed to enhancing West End Field by continuing
to add new fan pleasing features each year.
The stadium has received a number of awards including 2006 Ballpark of the Year described here in BaseballParks and rave reviews like the one found in this article from BALLPARKdigest.
Fountain at RiverPlace
Imagine a place right downtown designed for kids. What do kids like to do?
They like to get soaking wet. The Fountain at RiverPlace provides a place where
kids can have some fun after a day of shopping with their parents. The Fountains
change patterns and height seemingly at
random providing something new each visit. Parents can sit on benches next
to the Reedy River and enjoy the view or feed the ducks while their child does
what children do. The Fountain is located on the Reedy River side of RiverPlace. |
